Urban Codes and Cultural Comfort: A Closer Look at Motunrayo Yetunde Ajayi’s Urban Roots
By Yemisi Suleiman
Motunrayo Yetunde Ajayi’s Urban Roots collection, presented at the Fashion Finest Africa runway on June 3, 2023, offers a thoughtful exploration of identity, texture, and ease. The designer plays in the space between casual and cultural, delivering soft streetwear silhouettes wrapped in the quiet confidence of heritage.

The highlight is Ajayi’s use of traditional African motifs in contemporary contexts. Instead of overwhelming the garments with busy prints, she employs restraint placing batik-inspired orange-toned textiles in well-measured doses across joggers, hoodies, and sweatshirts. The result is a capsule that feels distinctly Nigerian yet globally accessible.
One standout look features a cream hoodie with an earthy batik panel across the chest and the hood, a subtle nod to ancestral symbols without shouting. Similarly, the matching tracksuit on the female model showcases bold sleeves of printed orange fabric against a muted base, creating a harmony of contrast that speaks to Ajayi’s keen eye for balance.
That said, the collection could have benefited from greater range in silhouette and styling. While the cohesiveness is commendable, most pieces follow the same cut round-neck sweatshirts and slim joggers. Adding varied shapes (a cropped jacket, layered tunic, or even a utilitarian vest) could have extended the storytelling and shown more technical depth.
But the potential is clear. Urban Roots captures the spirit of a new generation of Nigerian designers who aren’t just creating clothes, but codes. In Ajayi’s hands, streetwear becomes both a language of comfort and a container for cultural pride.
The takeaway? Don’t mistake softness for simplicity. There’s quiet strength stitched into every seam of this collection.
