Eniola Aluko becomes 1st black female football club owner in Italy
British-Nigerian former female footballer-turned-broadcaster, Eniola Aluko recently made history in Italy as she acquired FC Como, a female football club, making her the first female black woman to own a team in the women’s Serie A.
Aluko is part of Mercury 13, an investment group, which has been focused on acquiring women’s football clubs across Europe and Latin America.
Mercury 13 finalised its US$ 100 million acquisition by securing a controlling stake in the club.
Aluko played for Chelsea, Birmingham City, Charlton Athletic, Italy’s Sky Blue FC, and Atlanta Beats.
She also. represented the country at the Women’s World Cup and other international competitions.
After retiring from professional football, the 37-year-old former player became a football broadcaster and, more recently, a football executive.
This landmark acquisition by the Mercury 13 group, with Eni Aluko at the helm, represents a significant milestone in the history of Italian football and the ongoing efforts to promote diversity and inclusivity in the sport
