Review: Emeldah Atelier’s Inouwa Collection – A Vivid Reimagination of African Elegance at Afro Fashion Show 2024

Some collections are meant to be seen, but others are meant to be experienced, and Emeldah Atelier’s Inouwa Collection, unveiled on July 6th, 2024, at Manchester’s Hilton Deansgate for the Afro Fashion Show, was an experience from start to finish.

Designed by the brand’s creative director and fashion designer, Imelda Obiora, the collection radiated energy, confidence, and a deep reverence for African textile artistry.

From the moment the first model stepped onto the runway, it was clear this was a show about bold statements, striking silhouettes, and an unapologetic embrace of cultural identity.

The red halter dress with its voluminous circular skirt was the first look to take my breath away. The deep blue and yellow motifs on the red fabric created a regal contrast, instantly commanding attention.

The movement of the dress was hypnotic—each step sent ripples through the layers of fabric, turning the runway into a stage where fashion and motion intertwined. The model wore a golden headpiece woven into her blonde curls, adding an air of modern African royalty. It was a look that needed no embellishment—it was powerful on its own.

From there, the collection shifted in tone with a mustard-yellow sleeveless dress featuring bold black abstract prints. The high, structured collar gave it a sculptural quality, while the fluidity of the lower half softened the overall effect, creating a dynamic balance between strength and elegance.

The model’s hair, styled in natural textured puffs, brought a youthful and carefree spirit to the ensemble, proving that modern African fashion is as much about attitude as it is about design.

Then came the navy-blue off-the-shoulder dress, adorned with vibrant orange patterns. The fitted bodice hugged the model’s form before flaring out into a softly pleated skirt, allowing for graceful movement.

The print placement was meticulously thought out, creating a beautiful harmony between the structure of the dress and the natural lines of the patterns. Statement gold earrings and a sleek updo completed the look, reinforcing the sophisticated yet effortless aesthetic that defined the collection.

One of the most interesting silhouettes of the night was the brown-and-gold checkered sundress. The bodice was tailored to perfection, cinching the waist before flowing into a wide, pleated skirt. The tie-up shoulder details added an extra layer of charm, making the look feel both youthful and refined. The model carried the piece with ease, and with every step, the structured pleats gave the dress a light, breezy quality, perfect for a woman who moves with confidence.

Adding a contemporary edge to the collection was the yellow printed blazer and matching trousers. The structured blazer, with its strong shoulders and sharp tailoring, was a perfect contrast to the relaxed fit of the trousers, embodying a modern power-dressing aesthetic.

The vibrant blue and orange detailing made sure that the outfit stood out, and it was easy to picture this look beyond the runway—in boardrooms, art galleries, or at exclusive social events where statement fashion reigns supreme.

As the final walk commenced, there was a sense that Inouwa was not just a collection—it was a celebration. When Imelda Obiora stepped onto the runway, the pride in her eyes was unmistakable. This was a collection that honoured tradition, embraced modernity, and, most importantly, told a story through bold prints, thoughtful tailoring, and an unwavering love for African fashion.
