Review: Fluxx Spectral – Ponda’s Reality’s Visionary Blend of Tradition and Futurism

Babatunde Olaniwun, the creative director and fashion designer of the “Fluxx Spectral” collection, showcased under the Ponda’s Reality brand at the 4Real Fashion Festival: Juba Edition on July 26th, 2024, was a mesmerizing display of creativity and craftsmanship.

Witnessing the collection firsthand felt like being transported into a realm where traditional African elements seamlessly fused with futuristic innovation. The collection’s title, “Fluxx Spectral,” was fitting, as each piece appeared to shift and transform, playing with light and color in a way that captivated the audience.

The runway came alive with an explosion of vibrant colors and bold, experimental silhouettes. Babatunde’s expertise in craftsmanship was evident from the outset, with garments designed to catch the light and enhance movement.

The fabrics, ranging from shimmering textiles to structured materials, created a kaleidoscopic effect as models walked down the runway, perfectly embodying the collection’s spectral theme.

Cultural motifs were central to the collection, with traditional African patterns reimagined through a modern, avant-garde lens. The bold prints and intricate designs didn’t merely serve as decorative elements—they formed the backbone of the collection’s narrative. Babatunde’s skillful use of color brought this narrative to life.

One of the collection’s standout pieces featured a leopard print winter jacket with matching pants. The combination of the gold fur over the hoodie made it look more interesting and unique. This piece had an art-like quality, telling its own story of transformation, much like the ever-shifting spectrum the collection sought to represent. The garments felt as though they were alive, transforming with each step, highlighting Babatunde’s ability to blend form and function.

As the event progressed, one of the most striking ensembles made its debut, featuring an eye-catching vibrant red piece crafted into a sleek leather jacket and trousers. The bold, crimson hue of the leather contrasted beautifully with the smooth texture of the fabric, making the outfit a focal point on the runway. The jacket’s structured shoulders and tailored fit gave it a sharp, modern edge, while the trousers were slightly tapered, creating a balanced silhouette.

What truly set this look apart was the addition of a face mask, a bold twist that felt both futuristic and rebellious. The mask, designed in a matching red, featured intricate detailing and added an air of mystery to the model’s appearance. Paired with crisp white sneakers, the look exuded a casual yet avant-garde vibe, seamlessly blending streetwear elements with high fashion. The silver necklace, gleaming under the runway lights, served as a minimalist accessory, drawing the eye upward and enhancing the overall aesthetic. This ensemble was a perfect example of Babatunde Olaniwun’s ability to push boundaries, offering a fresh take on the intersection of culture, rebellion, and fashion-forward design.

The next model graced the runway with an air of effortless elegance, donning a striking ensemble that featured a deep green leather jacket paired with matching pants. The jacket’s rich, emerald hue was bold yet sophisticated, exuding a sense of luxury and power. Its sleek, tailored design was accentuated by the addition of a hoodie lined with plush, gold-toned fur, which added a touch of opulence and contrast to the structured leather. The fur trim caught the light as the model moved, highlighting the juxtaposition of textures that gave the piece an elevated, high-fashion appeal.

Underneath the jacket, the model wore a fitted black top, which served as a muted yet essential foundation for the look. The black top allowed the green leather and gold fur to take center stage, while also maintaining a sense of sleek, urban coolness. Completing the look was a black face mask, which added an element of intrigue and mystique. The mask seamlessly integrated with the outfit, emphasizing the futuristic, edgy aesthetic Babatunde Olaniwun seemed to be channeling throughout the “Fluxx Spectral” collection.

Another striking piece in this collection featured a jacket and pants crafted from a vibrant patchwork of multi-colored designs. Each patch seemed to tell its own story, with bold hues and varying textures seamlessly stitched together, creating a visually dynamic and eclectic look.

The jacket had a slightly oversized fit, allowing the colors to flow freely, while the pants were tailored to balance the playful nature of the patchwork. This ensemble was a perfect blend of artistry and fashion, showcasing Babatunde Olaniwun’s ability to experiment with texture and color in innovative ways.

The final piece of the event was a showstopper, with the model draped in an oversized dark grey suit that immediately commanded attention. The suit’s loose, flowing silhouette gave it an air of effortless sophistication, but what truly set it apart was the intricate, artistic detailing. It appeared as though the suit had been transformed into a canvas, with splashes of vibrant colors resembling an artist’s brushstrokes spread across the fabric.

These abstract designs, layered over the dark grey base, created a striking contrast, turning the outfit into a wearable work of art. This final piece encapsulated the creative spirit of the “Fluxx Spectral” collection, blending bold artistry with high fashion, and closing the show on a memorable note.

The styling of the models was minimalistic, ensuring the focus remained on the garments themselves, while the models confident and poised movements added to the overall impact of the presentation. The carefully curated lighting and music completed the experience, perfectly timed to emphasize the collection’s thematic elements.

In all, “Fluxx Spectral” was a striking example of Babatunde Olaniwun’s ability to blend cultural heritage with forward-thinking design. The collection was not just fashion, but a performance—of masterful expression of the flux between tradition and innovation, embodied in every stitch, fabric, and light.
