Summer Solo Travel: Safety Tips

By Yemisi Suleiman

As summer approaches, consider embarking on a solo adventure to explore new destinations, challenge yourself, and create lifelong memories. Wherever you decide to go, solo summer travel offers a unique chance for self-discovery and excitement.

However, to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey, here are some essential safety tips to keep in mind as you prepare for your trip.

1. Research Your Destination

Learn the local culture, customs, and safety concerns. Stay informed about weather, political events, and travel advisories.

2. Stay Connected

Share your itinerary with someone back home and check in regularly. Even a quick message can go a long way.

3. Book Smart

Choose safe, reputable accommodations, especially during busy summer months. Read reviews before you book!

4. Be Aware of Your Surroundings

Summer crowds are fun but can be distracting. Stay alert in tourist areas, festivals, and unfamiliar neighborhoods.

5. Keep Valuables Secure

Use a money belt or hidden pouch. Carry only what you need for the day, less is more!

6. Blend In & Use Safe Transport

Dress appropriately for the culture and weather. Use trusted taxis or rideshare apps, especially at night.

7. Trust Your Instincts

If something feels off—it probably is. Don’t overshare personal info with strangers.

8. Stay Healthy & Be Prepared

Drink water, get travel insurance, and know emergency numbers. Be ready for summer heat and surprises.
