Simple sustainable swaps you can make at home

Going green at home doesn’t require a complete lifestyle overhaul or expensive renovations. The most effective changes are often the simplest ones: small swaps that replace single-use, resource-heavy items with durable, low-waste alternatives.

These simple sustainable swaps reduce waste, cut down on plastic pollution, save money over time, and lighten your environmental footprint—all without much effort.

Kitchen Essentials

Paper towels: Replace paper towels with reusable dishcloths or cotton rags. They absorb better, wash easily, and last for hundreds of uses, eliminating stacks of paper waste.

Plastic wrap: Swap plastic wrap for beeswax wraps or silicone lids. Beeswax wraps mold to containers with hand warmth and stay reusable for months. Silicone lids fit almost anything and last years.

Disposable plastic bags: Use reusable silicone bags or glass jars instead of disposable plastic bags. They keep food fresh for lunches, snacks, and leftovers without creating more plastic trash.

Bathroom Basics

Liquid soaps: Switch from bottled liquid soap and shampoo to solid bars. They last longer, need little or no packaging, and come in great plastic-free options.

Disposable razors: Trade disposable razors for a metal safety razor with replaceable blades. The handle lasts decades and only the blades are replaced, producing far less waste.

Cotton pads: Replace cotton pads with reusable cloth rounds. Soft bamboo or cotton versions wash indefinitely and pair perfectly with gentle cleansers.

Daily Habits

Disposable bottles: A sturdy stainless steel or glass bottle and a keep-cup mean you can hydrate and caffeinate on the go without contributing to the billions of disposable bottles and cups discarded annually.
