Understanding Childhood ADHD

By Dr. Gbonjubola Abiri

Tobi was the child every teacher would rather not have in their class. He was unable to sit still in class, interrupted classes and conversations. The situation at home was pretty much the same. He would forget instructions he was given within a matter of seconds, misplace his toys and school books, as well as struggle to decide what to do.

His energy was always high. Teachers, parents and family members were all exhausted. Every method in the book had been tried. From scolding to naughty corners, star charts, time out from his favourite activities and punishment.Explanations

Explanations on his behaviour ranged from the fact that he was uncontrollable to the point that he was spoilt.

Unknown to everyone, Tobi wasn’t being stubborn, he was struggling. After a thorough assessment, a diagnosis of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADHD, was made. ADHD is a common neurodevelopmental condition that affects children and adults alike.

The assumption is often that children with this condition are hyperactive and restless. The truth about the condition is that it can present with attention deficit, a tendency to daydream, miss instructions, lose focus and appear lost in their own world. Some show a state of excess movement or physical restlessness, constant fidgeting, squirming or an inability to sit still.Symptoms

Symptoms of impulsivity may also happen as individuals may take actions without considering the consequences, interrupting conversations and having extreme difficulty to wait one’s turn. While some children may show hyperactivity or inattention or impulsivity, some others may have all symptoms.

Children with this condition may often be disregarded as unintelligent. Interestingly however, they are usually creative, curious and talented. The major issue with them is inability to regulate attention, control impulses, organise tasks and manage their behaviour.
When left unattended to and unmanaged, ADHD can affect self-esteem, friendships and academic performance. Many children who have been constantly criticised start to believe they are ‘lazy’, ‘the problem’ or ‘not good enough’. The condition may then lead to depression, anxiety, low confidence and self-perception in addition to other behavioural disorders.

ADHD can be managed effectively with early identification and intervention. Treatment is individualised and tailored to meet the specific needs of the child and may include: family psychoeducation, parent and teacher training, classroom accommodations, psychological support and when needed, medication.
Tobi is still a bundle of energy and talent. While he still needs support every now and then, it is now a world of difference as he has been exposed to understanding and support over the years.

Sometimes, all we need to do is pay attention, show love and support to a child whose behaviour we may not completely understand. That seemingly difficult behaviour, may just be the child’s cry for help.

Remember there is no health without mental health.
