Six Questions NOT To Ask A Nigerian Single Girl

By Oluwakemi,

Society can be hard on the girl child. When she grows up and is single, a new fate awaits her.

Growing up, girls were sternly advised to stay away from boys. As a girl, you were warned: “If a man touches you, you will become pregnant.” This was hammered into her at every point in time. And when she is barely out of secondary school, the same people, who warned her off men, start asking:  “Fine girl like you, don’t you have a boyfriend?”

And if she managed to elude their questions, by the time she is graduating, you can bet, everyone is expecting her to show up with a fiancé in one hand and her university certificate in the other hand, with the announcement of an impending wedding ceremony on her lips!

How is she supposed to go from one extreme end of avoiding boys to bringing home a fiancé?

Some people have been able to achieve this feat, others are being pressured day and night to perform. This situation can sometimes be very disturbing. While she is dealing with it, here are comments, you shouldn’t bother saying to her.

No disrespect, just stay on your lane, if you cannot but say these things.

“Just put yourself out there a bit more”

Really? Besides, physically locking herself out of her house, not coming home and having her parents declare her missing, I don’t think, most single ladies could be physically anymore out there. They are all out there, everywhere.

“Don’t worry about it! It’ll happen when you least expect it”

And that is WHEN exactly? By the time, she is 60 years old, shriveled and needing assistance to do her business? Please, let it stop, if you have nothing better to say.

“Oh my gosh, I’ve got the PERFECT guy to set you up with”

Did you say guy? Okay, so what are your own credentials as a match maker? Are they one of your own cast offs or worse, friends of your boyfriend, who hasn’t proposed since the last 10years you have been dating? No, I think she will pass.

“You’re just too picky, that’s all.”

Really? Considering she most likely has been open to dating almost every man introduced to her except her brothers, uncles and Dad, I think picky might not be the right word.

“Your life is so exciting! I’m so jealous!”

God is watching you in 3D. How can you be jealous when you have a man whom you cosy up to every night and all she does is watch TV and wait for Mr. Right? That statement simply shows the kind of friend you are; a wicked one. Believe me; most single ladies in our clime, would love to be in your shoes.

“So, how’s your love life?”

Exactly what are you fishing for? How many times, she’s had sex in the last six months or the number of dates she has gone on? Don’t worry, by the time, her man enters the picture, you will not be told, you will see literally. So, save the question.

Some of these comments demand an eye roll and a sarcastic response and others are just not worth being dignified with a response.

Single ladies; feel free to tell us some of the questions and comments that have come your way.

Whatever is the case, stay true to yourself.
