Allure Cover: Falz – The Breakout Star in Chief Daddy

Multitalented music star, songwriter and actor, Folarin Falana again brought his rare talent to bear with his exceptional performance in the recently premiered movie, ‘Chief Daddy’- a dramatic comedy from EbonyLife Films.

The movie set for release December 14, is centred on the life of billionaire industrialist Chief Beecroft, who passes away, and suddenly the ‘wheels begin to turn’, and things go awry for the family.

Alongside a long list of Nollywood stars, Folarin popularly called by his stage name ‘Falz’, in the movie Produced by Mo Abudu, takes on the role of ‘Famzy’, the spoiled, privileged son and heir apparent of Chief Beecroft.

His thuggish British accent and attitude, coupled with his overconfidence in his mediocre music and his unrealistic life goals make him a favourite with viewers. From his role as “Sege’ in the TV comedy series to his bubbling music career, Falz has been steadily hard at work, making a name for himself in the entertainment industry.

Son of Legal Luminary, Femi Falana, Falz who is also a trained Lawyer came to limelight in 2011, with the release of his single ‘High Class’. Later with an Album titled ‘Waz up Guy’ with some hit tracks, which were a successful outing. He has also played many characters in different movies, a feat which earned him some nominations and awards, including the Africa Magic Viewers Choice, twice, and the BET Awards.

With his career on the right track, Allure caught up with Falz on his role in ‘Chief Daddy’, life as an actor and rapper, his parents as his greatest inspiration and his next big move.

What was it like playing the role of chief’s son in the movie ‘Chief Daddy’? Tell us about your character?

It was challenging. Only because, I had to study certain cultures, dialects and behaviours, in other to embrace my character entirely, but it was unusual for me because I like challenges. Also, working with a fantastic star-studded cast made it so much fun.

Was it a role you enjoyed doing and why?

Oh, very much so! I enjoyed the role because it was challenging for me and like I said earlier, I embrace challenges, but the warmth regarding reception from the other cast members on set made it so easy for me. Everyone was amiable, receptive and friendly.

Personally, what attracted you to the script and what moral lesson should one take away from the movie?

Hmm, I think the fact that it is a bit of an unusual story including the manner of telling it, was what I liked most about the movie. That is what I looked out for, and what attracted me to the script. It is a great story told creatively and entertainingly. The moral lesson behind the story for me is ‘LOVE’; ‘love’ conquers all regardless of what situation; what family predicaments you find yourself or you are born into; it is essential to keep family close and love each other.

You started with music and then movies. What inspired your journey into the film world?

It would have to be my passion for films. I love movies, and I have always been passionate about it. I somehow stumbled into it, but I am happy that I did, and it is something I will continue to do.

For someone who read law and is expected to follow in his father’s path; what was the reaction of your family members when you decided it was music and movies you were interested in, was it something they welcomed?

(Laughs) Yes! There was never a battle or conflict when I decided I wanted to do entertainment. They encouraged me, but of course, the important thing for them was that I had to finish school and get my degree and I did. So we were right!

At what point in life did you discover your creative flair, and how did you nurture it?

My creative flair came about, I would say, since secondary school. I think I was in SS1 at the time when I started writing, as well as rapping. I continued to keep that passion alive even after secondary school. While I was at the university, I think my second year, was when I decided to do it professionally, since then it has been a great story.

What would be your dream role, and what would you bring to it?

(Laughing) Ah! It would have to be an action film, like a superhero movie, where I can play the role of Black Panther. However, like a Nigerian Black Panther, I would bring a very different quirky twist to being a superhero.

You have won several awards since coming into the industry. How does that make you feel, and does it put any pressure on you, regarding staying on top of your game?

It makes me feel good, and I feel very excited. Of course, there’s a little bit of pressure because like the famous saying, it is hard to get up, but it is even harder to stay on top. That in itself is some form of pressure, but I work every day, and I am committed to being as disciplined as possible. I feel that if I continue to stay grounded, I can continue to achieve great things.

Who has been your greatest inspiration in life?

(Smiles) I would say, my parents, to be honest. They inspire me in everything they do, their sheer hard work, extreme dedication, and philanthropy; basically, what they have been able to achieve in every aspect of their life has motivated me to want to make great things, as well.

When you are not working on your music or a movie set, how do you relax?

I play video games. I play football, and sometimes I try to work out, but that’s not any form of relaxation, let’s be honest; it is stressful! (laughs)

How would you describe your taste in fashion?

My taste in fashion is simple but stylish. I like to keep it simple, at the same time, I want to be smart.

How do you keep fit?

I try to do some jogging and other forms of exercises. I have tried to register in the gym, but so far that hasn’t worked out yet, but I mostly exercise on my own, and I play football a lot.

What is your greatest fear in life?
I would have to say failure. Failure is my greatest fear, and that is why I keep working hard.

What is the next ‘BIG thing’ for Falz?

(Rubs his beards) I am working on a new album that is scheduled to be released by God’s grace, early next year, but I am not ready to make any announcements yet. Just watch out for it!

What is one fun fact about you that people might not be aware?

(Laughs) I cannot swim. It is not funny, because I would like to be able to, but I think it is a bit late for me to learn.
