5 Common Myths associated with Fibriods

May 31,2019
Share:

FibriodsFibriods are non-cancerous tumours that develop within the walls of the womb. They could cause disturbances or distortions in the reproductive system. The actual cause of fibroids remain unknown, though raised oestrogen levels are often associated with the increased growth of fibroids. They usually occur during a woman’s reproductive years and shrink at menopause.

Statistics show that approximately 20 to 80% of women of reproductive age have fibriods massive enough to cause symptoms. There have been a lot of myths surrounding fibriods. We have listed below debunking them:

  1. Fibriods equals cancer

Fibriods are not cancerous and their presnece do not result to uterine cancer.

    2.  Fibroids are not common

In fact they are common in women all of the world in about 20 % of them over 30 years of age.  They are common in women who have not had children, obese women, black women, women whose relatives have fibriod and women older than 30.

 3. When you have fibriods you will know

Most women in their reproductive age group have fibriods ranging from the size of a bean to about a watermelon. They are fed by oestrogen. Small fibriods have symptoms such as heavy menses, pelvic pain, increased urination, inability to hold urine, constipation, defecation, rectal pain, abdominal cramps, abdominal swellings and early satiety.

  4.  Fibriods would cause infertility

Fibriods can grow near the fallopian tube and cervix causing blockage of sperm and egg through the uterus and tube. Fibriods can also line the cavity of the uterus making it impossible for pregnancy to occur. However, it is still possible to get pregnant with fibriods.

5. When you have fibriods, surgery is the only solution

Treatment of fibriods depends on a number of factors . Your overall health, number and size of fibriods , symptoms and the desire to get pregnant are major considerations. Using drugs (such as birth control pills, hormonal pills and painkillers) are appropriate for patients with mild symptoms or small fibriods. Surgery is for large fibriods and those with severe symptoms.
