Review: Afric Aura by Kenshu: Celebrating African Heritage Through Fashion
By Rita Okoye
The Afric Aura Collection by Kenshu, designed by the creative duo Kelechi Sandra Innocent and Sukurat Abimbola Memud, left a lasting impression at the AFAA Runway Showcase 2024 in Cape Town, South Africa, on November 7.

The collection was a beautiful blend of African heritage and modern fashion, offering designs that were vibrant, bold, and deeply rooted in culture.
The show opened with a stunning black off-shoulder gown featuring bold yellow geometric patterns. Oversized bow details on the sleeves gave it a dramatic edge, while the flowing fabric moved gracefully down the runway. The model’s playful twin puff ponytails added a fun, youthful vibe to the look, setting the tone for the rest of the show.
The second look brought an explosion of colour—a halter-neck gown with swirls of red, yellow, purple, and green. The corset-style bodice and full skirt created a silhouette that was both striking and elegant. Paired with a braided updo, the design felt like a perfect nod to African traditions with a contemporary twist.
Next came a strapless midi dress with intricate blue, white, and gold floral patterns. The high-low hemline and peplum flair gave it a playful sophistication, while the minimalist accessories let the craftsmanship and vibrant fabric take centre stage.

The magenta maxi dress that followed was unforgettable, featuring bold geometric prints and playful shoulder-tie accents. The tiered hemline added movement and texture, making it one of the standout designs of the collection.
A black-and-white strapless dress combined traditional African-inspired prints with delicate lace detailing, creating a look that felt timeless yet modern. The flowing silhouette and intricate details showcased the designers’ exceptional skill and vision.
Finally, the show closed with a dramatic tiger-print gown. Its voluminous silhouette, deep plunging neckline, and flowing fabric commanded attention, leaving the audience in awe.

The gown seemed to come alive as the model walked, capturing the energy and vibrancy that defined the entire collection.
The Afric Aura Collection wasn’t just about clothes—it was about storytelling, culture, and the art of fashion. Every piece felt like a celebration of African identity brought to life with bold prints, stunning details, and modern silhouettes. Kelechi Sandra Innocent and Sukurat Abimbola Memud truly created something special, and their work is a testament to the power of fashion to connect tradition and innovation.
