The convergence of tradition and modernity took center stage as the creative director, Akindele Mary Tosin, of Ramyjoo Apparel, unveiled the brand’s highly anticipated ‘Timeless Elegance’ collection at the Arcade Fashion Week 2024.

The showcase, held at Café One Palm Shopping Mall, Ring Road, Ibadan, on December 23rd, 2024, presented a masterful interpretation of African fashion heritage through a contemporary lens.

The event, themed ‘Black Culture,’ celebrated cultural heritage, and without a doubt, Mary delivered on the theme, showcasing an exquisite fusion of both Native and English wear, which offered a fresh perspective on cultural heritage.

The collection stood as a testament to Akindele Mary’s commitment to crafting designs that are timeless and innovative in every way. It reinforced the brand’s position as a vanguard in the fashion industry, with a vision that bridges cultural authenticity and global style movements.

Arcade Fashion Week 2024 was more than just a showcase for them; it was a declaration of the brand’s promise to evolve while staying rooted in its unique cultural essence continually. This debut has left fashion enthusiasts eagerly anticipating her next chapter.

The collection’s brilliance unfolded with several sophisticated men’s and women’s pieces. The first model graced the runway in regal native attire—a traditional Yoruba-inspired three-piece Agbada outfit that immediately caught the eye. It showcased intricate geometric embroidery work on the neckline, demonstrating Tosin’s attention to detail.

The flowing silhouette of the outer robe, paired with fitted underlying garments, created a perfect balance between traditional volume and contemporary structure. A bold accessory, like a statement cap or striking footwear, could also amplify the outfit’s character, proving its adaptability and timeless appeal.

Another standout piece was the Refined Senator Suit in a rich plum hue, embodying minimalist elegance. This senator-style outfit showcased impeccable tailoring, with a streamlined fit that exuded confidence and poise.

The long-sleeved tunic, paired with matching trousers, achieved a perfect balance of traditional and modern aesthetics. The addition of sleek black shoes completed the look with finesse, making it a masterpiece of minimalist sophistication.

Commanding attention with its striking designs, the women’s pieces were also an unforgettable one, adding vibrancy to the showcase, beginning with a vivid yellow dress that was unapologetically bold and gave a feeling of nostalgia.

This statement piece exuded energy and confidence, with its flowing skirt and structured bodice striking the perfect balance between playful and elegant. The detailed neckline highlighted refined craftsmanship, while the long sleeves added a classic touch, ensuring the design’s versatility for both daytime and evening occasions.

The runway event created an intimate atmosphere that allowed guests to appreciate the garments’ fine details. The audience’s enthusiastic response was particularly notable during the presentation of the cream agbada ensemble, with a visible appreciation for its masterful blend of traditional grandeur and contemporary wearability. The models’ confident runway presence effectively showcased the garments’ movement and versatility.

The collection received an overwhelmingly positive response from the crowd gathered at the runway show as models showcased these outfits. The intimate venue setting, complete with festive decorations including hanging stars and holiday accents, created an engaging atmosphere that enhanced the presentation. The seated audience’s reactions ranged from appreciative nods to enthusiastic applause, particularly during the showcase of the more elaborate traditional pieces.

Akindele Mary Tosin’s collection demonstrates her growing mastery of cross-cultural fashion fusion. Her ability to maintain traditional silhouettes while incorporating modern elements showcases a deep understanding of both contemporary fashion demands and cultural heritage.

The collection’s success lies in its accessibility to both traditionally-minded and contemporary fashion enthusiasts.

As the Arcade Fashion Week drew to a close, Mary’s collection left an indelible mark on the runway, reminding the world that true elegance lies in the ability to honor the past while embracing the present. The presentation highlighted Tosin’s technical skills in garment construction and her artistic vision in creating pieces that respect tradition while embracing modernity. The collection stands as a testament to the evolving landscape of African fashion and its growing influence in contemporary fashion.
