WHAT TO DO WHEN LIFE HANDS YOU LEMONS

When life hands you a lemon or something unexpected occurs that changes the course of your plans, it can feel overwhelming, sad, or upsetting.

However, it’s important to take the time to process those emotions and then focus on the positive opportunities that are now available to you.

Remember, the world is your oyster. Here are five pieces of advice to help you cope and adapt when life throws you a curveball.

TAKE YOUR TIME

Change often happens suddenly. One day, everything feels normal, and the next day, it doesn’t. But remember: you don’t have to react immediately. You can regain control over your time and don’t need to panic or rush into decisions. In many cases, everything happens for a reason. Give yourself the space to determine your next steps.

GET ANOTHER PERSPECTIVE

What may appear to be the worst situation possible often isn’t as dire as it seems. The initial shock or surprise can cloud your judgment. Sometimes, when life hands you a lemon, it can turn out to be a blessing in disguise—you just may not realise it yet.

BE PRAGMATIC

Keeping an open mind is essential. Approach the situation rationally and think about what you want to do next. If the house you were planning to buy falls through, take a moment to reassess what that means for you and what your next steps should be. The house you ultimately end up in maybe even better, so don’t lose your emotional and rational stability just because this one didn’t turn out as expected.

SEEK SUPPORT

One of the best aspects of having friends and family is their availability during tough times—whether you need a laugh, a shoulder to cry on, or a fresh perspective. Lean on your loved ones for advice and reassurance. Keep close to those individuals in your life who truly matter.

EMBRACE THE ADVENTURE

That lemon might just be the best thing that ever happens to you, but you must embrace it with an open mind. View this change as an opportunity or a trigger for your next adventure. Why not take this chance to update your bucket list, take that leap of faith, or finally pursue those things you’ve been putting off? You only live once, so make the most of it!
