From Silver Screen to Sacred Service: 7 Celebrities Embracing Higher Calling

For many, Easter is a time to celebrate faith, love, forgiveness and the transformative power of redemption.

As we contemplate these themes, a fascinating narrative unfolds within Nigeria’s bustling entertainment industry, Nollywood. A number of its brightest stars who once captivated audiences with their on-screen portrayals of drama, comedy, and intrigue, have answered a different kind of calling – dedicating their lives to serving in the Lord’s vineyard.

It’s a transition that can raise eyebrows, a shift from embodying fictional characters, sometimes with questionable morals, to becoming spiritual guides. They remind us that the path to spiritual fulfillment can take unexpected turns, and that individuals from all walks of life can answer a higher calling.

Today, we shine our light on these remarkable individuals who have found a perfect way to blend spotlight and the pulpit, finding a new form of fulfillment in spreading a message of faith and hope.

Liz Benson: A Veteran’s Voice for the Divine
For many Nigerians, the name Liz Benson conjures images of a captivating actress who graced our screens in countless movies and TV series. Born on April 5th, 1966, this now 59-year-old veteran carved a niche for herself with her undeniable talent.
However, in 2009, a new chapter began when she married Bishop Great Emeya and embraced a life dedicated to evangelism. Today, she co-runs the Freedom Family Assembly in Warri, Delta State, with her husband.
Reflecting on her transition in an interview, Benson eloquently expressed her fulfillment: “I can’t really describe how it feels now but it is one of the most fulfilling times of my life. Being available to God, to humanity and doing something that is touching lives… you are investing in the lives of people and seeing that effect on them is most fulfilling.” With sixteen years of marriage and three children – Richard, Lilian, and Rosel – her life now intertwines family and faith, a testament to her commitment to her chosen path.

Charles Okafor: Mindful Filmmaking and Ministry
Charles Okafor, a pioneering figure in Nollywood and now 64, was a familiar face during the industry’s formative years. In the 2000s, however, his path took a spiritual turn, leading him to full-time ministry focused on winning souls for Christ. Still involved in filmmaking, Okafor now approaches his craft with a discerning eye, prioritising advocacy films that address crucial social issues. “You cannot just do any kind of film anymore if you’re going to be the light to the nations of the world,” he stated, emphasising the importance of creating content that glorifies God.

Patience Ozokwor: From Wicked Mother-in-Law to Woman of God
The name “Mama G” once sent shivers down the spines of fictional daughter-in-laws across the nation. Patience Ozokwor, now 66, cemented her legendary status in Nollywood with her unforgettable portrayals of often-troublesome characters. But in the late 2010s, a profound transformation occurred. Following a powerful revelation during a 2016 retreat, Ozokwor answered the call to evangelism.
Her decision was initially met with misunderstanding from her daughter, who had seen her actively preaching in various church programs. Speaking at the PowerHouse Interdenominational Worship Centre, she shared, “God called me to work for him and I obeyed immediately.” Her dedication to her new mission is evident in her appearances at churches, where she openly speaks about her divine encounter.

Zack Orji: An Actor Captured by Divine Zeal
Another veteran actor, Zack Orji, also heeded the call in 2012, becoming an ordained minister and preacher of the gospel. For Orji, the motivation was clear: “I get excited when I have the opportunity to speak to people, inspire them, and draw them closer to God.” He has since dedicated his life to full-time evangelism and serves as a pastor at the Power Line Bible Church. This commitment has naturally influenced his choice of movie roles, prioritising his spiritual convictions.

Eucharia Anunobi: Eloquence in Entertainment and Evangelism
Eucharia Anunobi, the elegant and eloquent actress famous for her role in the 1994 classic “Glamour Girls” and numerous other films, has also embraced a life of ministry. Today, she is an ordained evangelist at the Fresh Oil Ministry in Egbeda, Lagos, where she serves as a preacher and youth counselor. Her articulate nature, once captivating audiences on screen, now serves to deliver powerful messages of faith and guidance.

Jimmy Odukoya: Carrying the Mantle with a Familiar Face
The ascension of Jimmy Odukoya to the position of senior pastor at The Fountain Of Life Church following the passing of his father, Pastor Taiwo Odukoya, sparked considerable discussions. His background as an actor in Nollywood led some to question the appointment.
However, Jimmy Odukoya’s involvement in ministry predates this transition. Ordained as a licensed minister in 2009, he has been actively contributing to the church’s growth for years. Despite the initial controversy, the church continues to thrive under his leadership, demonstrating that his commitment to ministry is more than just a family legacy.

Banky W: From Music and Movies to Full-Time Ministry
Bankole Wellington, the renowned musician and actor known as Banky W, transitioned into full-time ministry in 2020 at Tony Rapu’s ‘This Present House Church.’ His social media presence now blends his musical talents with powerful sermons delivered to his congregation. Married to fellow actor Adesua Etomi, Banky W uses his platforms to share inspiring and motivational messages. Alongside his pastoral duties, he continues to engage with his musical roots, even releasing a gospel track with Mercy Chinwo, showcasing a harmonious blend of his past and present callings.
