7 Makeup Pilling Mistakes to Fix

There is nothing more frustrating than spending precious time perfecting your makeup, only to watch it ball up and roll off your skin like eraser shavings. Makeup pilling can ruin a flawless finish, but the good news is, it’s completely preventable.

Here are 7 common reasons your makeup is pilling, and exactly how to stop it before it starts.

  1. Too Many Layers of Skincare
Layering too many serums, moisturisers, and primers can overwhelm your skin and prevent products from absorbing properly.
Fix it: Stick to a streamlined routine. Let each layer absorb fully before applying the next, wait at least 30 seconds to 1 minute.
  2. Wrong Product Combinations
Not all products play well together. Oil-based and water-based formulas can clash, causing your makeup to lift or pill.
Fix it: Check the base of your products and pair like with like (oil with oil, water with water).
  3. Skipping Exfoliation
Dead skin cells on the surface can interfere with how products sit on your face.
Fix it: Gently exfoliate 1–2 times a week with a mild chemical or physical exfoliant to keep your skin smooth and fresh.
  4. Applying Too Much Product
More isn’t always better. Excess product can build up and create texture.
Fix it: Use a light hand and build up only where needed. A pea-sized amount of moisturiser or primer is usually enough.
  5. Rushing Your Routine
If you’re layering products too quickly, they don’t have time to sink in, and your makeup will suffer.
Fix it: Take your time. Let skincare settle before applying foundation.
  6. Using the Wrong Tools
Fingers, brushes, or sponges can all cause pilling if used incorrectly.
Fix it: Pat or press products in instead of rubbing them. Try using a damp beauty sponge for a seamless finish.
  7. Old or Expired Products
Sometimes it’s not you, it’s the product. Expired or low-quality formulas are more likely to pill.
Fix it: Regularly check your products’ shelf life. If a product changes in texture or smell, it’s time to toss it.
