YOUR BODY IS TALKING: ARE YOU LISTENING?

Chika never saw it coming.
She was 42, thriving in her career, raising two children, and juggling the constant demands of being the reliable first daughter in a Nigerian family. On the outside, she looked like someone who had it all together. But inside, her body had been trying to get her attention for years.

There were warning signs – subtle, then persistent.
Bloating after meals. Constant fatigue. Headaches that crept in by midday. Palpitations that came and went. Insomnia that even herbal teas couldn’t fix. But she kept going.

I thought I was just stressed, she said. Thats normal, right? Everyone I know is tired.
Until her body forced her to stop.

One Sunday afternoon, while cooking lunch, Chika felt a wave of dizziness. Her heart raced. Her left arm felt heavy. Before she could sit down, she collapsed. Her children found her unconscious on the kitchen floor. She was rushed to the hospital, where she woke up hooked to machines.

The diagnosis? Severe hypertension. Early-stage heart failure. Complete physical and emotional burnout.
I was shocked, Chika recalled in a small voice. I wasn’t sick. At least I didn’t think I was. I was functioning. Working. Providing. But I had ignored every signal.

Like many high-performing women, Chika had normalised dysfunction. She mistook warning signs for productivity tax. She thought resilience meant pushing through, even when her body begged for rest.
In that hospital bed, she had no choice but to listen.

The Turning Point
After her near-death experience, Chikas recovery wasnt just about medication and rest. It was about learning how to live differently – intentionally, not reactively.
One of the most important steps she took was reaching out for support. I knew I didnt want a quick fix, she said. I needed to change how I had been living – from the inside out.
Thats when she began working with a wellness coach.

With gentle but consistent guidance, Chika started uncovering the patterns that had led to her breakdown. She learned how her sleep habits, stress load, food choices, and lack of boundaries were all connected. Together, they built a sustainable wellness rhythm – one rooted in awareness, not willpower.

It wasnt about cutting out food or going on some rigid plan, she explained. It was more about tuning in – learning what my body needed and how to honour it without guilt.
She began journaling her energy levels, paying attention to her digestion, adding healing foods to her meals, setting boundaries around work, and carving out moments of rest without apology.

Today, Chika isn’t just functioning – she’s thriving. She sleeps better, thinks clearer, and says she feels more at home in her body than she ever has.

Working with a wellness coach, she says, gave her more than tools it gave her a mirror, a roadmap, and a sense of accountability. For once, I wasn’t trying to do everything alone. And that changed everything.

Chikas Advice?
Dont wait for a crisis. If something feels off, it probably is. Start small. Start early. Start now.
Your body speaks in whispers before it ever screams.

Let Chikas story be your nudge to start listening – before your body has to shout.
Because your body is talking.
And its time to finally hear what its saying.
