Fifi Stitches: Petals and Power

As African Creatives continue to evolve, the industry has gained significant momentum globally in terms of expansion, structure, and design. African designers have continued to push the boundaries of African fashion, style, and culture beyond international runways to global markets. Wherever they are, they continue to dominate the scene, connecting African heritage with contemporary fashion across international markets. One such brand is Fifi Stitches. Fifi Stitches is a contemporary fashion brand operating between Lagos and London, bridging African craftsmanship with modern global design.  Her latest collection, ‘Petals and Power,’ speaks to this vision. The collection explores femininity through sculptural layering, creating pieces that feel light, expressive, and yet intentionally constructed. The silhouettes are designed to shape the body while allowing movement and fluidity, giving each look a sense of presence without heaviness. There is a quiet confidence in each piece’s softness that refuses to be overlooked.

Of particular note is the short floral blazer dress, an eye-catching outfit that speaks to both European and African fashion. The use of Ankara print and tulle introduces depth and cultural effect at the same time. Fifi made a smart choice with the blazer silhouette, which offers a tailored, confident frame that contrasts perfectly with the softness of the floral elements.

The intertwined effect of the masculine tailoring and feminine details is where the design stands out. The tulle petals stand out beautifully, giving volume and movement to the outfit, taking it from a simple floral dress to something sculptural. The long sleeves with organza detailing, reminiscent of a soft fur-like finish, undoubtedly brings drama and runway appeal. The choice of the colour blue is great and sits pretty on the model, and her hairstyle in long blonde braids is one hairstyle that is synonymous with Africans.

This again showcases the designer’s strong creative prowess and ability to merge Western and African aesthetics, suitable for editorial shoots, high fashion events, and more. The second outfit is a classy blend of African and contemporary designs: A bustier mini dress in a beautiful bright, printed lemon color, with a layered tulle ruffle dress. It’s fun, flirty, and absolutely a favorite among young women universally.  While the first and second outfits are dresses, Fifi showed her aesthetic strength in a third outfit: a brown tailored pant and a pretty frill blouse. Layered tulle for volume and texture  The designer’s brilliance was expressed in her choice of colours, fabric, and designs: soft mesh and sheer fabrics for depth and transparency, and structured base fabrics to support and shape silhouettes. This was balanced by the design detail: Hand-layered tulle creating petal-like textures and sculpted silhouettes defining the waist and form. With the blazer dress, the designer shines brightly with her interplay between masculine tailoring and feminine detailing. For Fifi, the collection is inspired by the idea that femininity is not one thing. It draws from women who are soft but powerful, expressive yet composed, women who take up space without losing their grace. The petal-like textures reflect vulnerability and beauty, while the structured shaping represents control, confidence, and identity.

However, while the collection is compelling and has a universal appeal, the execution may be somewhat overwhelming. For instance, the blazer dress with the “fur” effect on the sleeves, though dramatic, may read slightly disconnected from the floral narrative if it is not carefully color-matched or proportioned.

Presentation of the collection may have been better though; the designer played safe by working with just one kind of fabric in different colors, which somewhat limited her creativity. A mix of fabric, patterns, and textures would have elevated the whole output.

Notwithstanding, for a brand whose design philosophy is built on inclusivity, identity, and self-expression, each design balances structure and softness, modesty and modernity, and heritage with contemporary style, all of which are traits of a prolific designer waiting to explore the globe via connecting African heritage with contemporary fashion across international markets.
