KEEP YOUR MIND SHARP FOR LIFE

You may be exercising your body while quietly allowing your brain to become lazy.
Think about it.
Your phone remembers birthdays. Search engines answer questions before you wrestle with them. Autocorrect finishes your words. Even phone numbers we once knew by 8129930965 have disappeared from memory.
Convenient? Absolutely.

But your brain was designed to be used, challenged and stretched.
When we talk about protecting the brain, many people immediately think about dementia. Brain health is much bigger than that. It is about protecting the abilities that make everyday life possible: attention, judgement, learning, problem-solving, emotional regulation and memory.
One fascinating concept is cognitive reserve. Think of it as your brains resilience accountthe capacity it builds through years of learning, mental stimulation, social interaction and healthy living. The richer that reserve, the better equipped the brain may be to cope with age-related changes or injury.
The good news? You can keep making deposits.

Make your brain work
Occasionally calculate without your phone. Memorise a short shopping list. Learn peoples names. Read something that challenges your thinking and discuss it afterwards.
Learn something genuinely new. Pick up a language, musical instrument, dance step, technology skill or hobby. Novelty forces the brain out of autopilot.

Protect the highways to your brain
Your brain needs a healthy blood supply. That makes managing blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol part of brain care not simply heart care.

Know your numbers. Move regularly. Eat more vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grains, nuts and healthy fats, and include oily fish where possible. What supports your heart often supports your brain too.

Stop celebrating constant busyness
A brain that never gets rest is not necessarily a productive brain.
Protect your sleep. Create moments of quiet. Take walks without constantly checking your phone. Allow yourself to occasionally be bored. Your brain does important processing when it is not being bombarded with information.

Build relationships, not just followers
One surprisingly powerful brain workout is conversation. Listening, remembering, interpreting emotions, responding and laughing all require mental engagement.
Call someone. Join a community. Maintain friendships. Have conversations that go deeper than forwarding WhatsApp messages.
And here is one more habit we rarely associate with brain health: stay curious.

Ask questions. Explore unfamiliar ideas. Travel. Meet people outside your usual circle. Refuse to become mentally predictable.
We spend enormous energy trying to keep our faces looking younger.

Perhaps we should be equally intentional about keeping the mind behind the face vibrant.
Your challenge this week: do one unfamiliar thing, have one meaningful conversation and learn one new thing.

Dont simply add years to your life.
Build a brain capable of fully participating in those years.
Until next time, lets glow intentionally.
