Victoria Oluwakemi Owolabi, the visionary force behind Movek Fashion, has unveiled her latest collection, Àbísó; a bold celebration of heritage and modernity fusing the timeless craftsmanship of Yoruba textile traditions with modern, innovative design to create a striking collection of identity, elegance, and cultural pride.

Building on the momentum of her acclaimed debut, Oríkì, a vivid celebration of ancestral identity through bold textiles and cultural symbolism, the Àbísó collection marks a very introspective turn. With this collection, each garment becomes a deliberate statement of meaning and modernity.

Derived from the Yoruba language, “Àbísó” translates loosely to “one born into a name” or “child given a name at birth.” It is a term layered with meaning, denoting not only identity but legacy, intention, and continuity. This collection draws deeply from that well, channeling a message that is both personal and communal.

Àbísó, as the collection name, is a line that builds on the idea of personal identity and self-expression. It highlights how the designs blend traditional and contemporary elements to create a visually striking and culturally significant fashion line that empowers the wearers in all aspects.

Visually, the collection’s first impression is undeniably striking. The female gown is a prime example—a bold burnt-orange satin dress with structured shoulders and a cascading silhouette.

The ruched corset-style bodice and puffed sleeves add drama, while a gathered midsection introduces a romantic softness. It is a stunning composition, but it toes the line between traditional elegance and fashion pageantry.

This dress stirs up a visual dialogue as to what broader design statement it makes beyond being beautiful and if it does it speak to a modern Yoruba woman, or a nostalgic version of her.


The Teal Agbada-Inspired Set is also a look of some prominence. The look exudes a polished and laid-back masculinity. The teal ensemble is well-fitted and appears to be a comfortable fit, featuring subtle embroidery along the neckline, cuffs, and chest pocket. The hat adds a regal, traditional flair, which is a smart contrast to the modern cut of the outfit. Seems to be just a lovely addition to the collection and a befitting fit for Owolabi’s designs.

Among the standout designs is the striking two-piece Afrocentric menswear seen in one of the featured looks. Rendered in a brilliant shade of electric blue, the outfit captures attention without pleading for it. The top, structured yet relaxed, balances art and wearability through a printed front panel that evokes the feel of an illustrated cityscape—one that hints at memory, architecture, and timelessness. The placement of golden strokes in the top’s shoulder region subtly suggests warmth and royalty, a nod perhaps to the cultural wealth that names like Abísó carry.

The trousers are sleek, tapered, and immaculately tailored, extending the story of the top into an uninterrupted silhouette. Paired with chunky-soled black loafers, the styling suggests a younger audience—bold, rooted, and expressive in motion. It is a look that bridges generational language: distinctly modern, yet grounded in cultural reverence.

Equally captivating is the two-piece Adire outfit, which pays homage to Yoruba textile heritage. The silhouette feels intentionally bold and confident, giving even more presence and definition with the gorgeous blue color hues.

Accessories are also well-chosen to fit this look: gold jewelry is clearly one that strikes the right balance.

Basically, this Adire two-piece is a standout as it successfully honors Yoruba textile heritage through a modern, fashion-forward lens. There is a definite right balance between traditional richness and contemporary glam.
Victoria Oluwakemi Owolabi’s creative signature is becoming increasingly recognizable: clean lines, unapologetic use of color, and a certain visual rhythm that never feels accidental. Her approach is neither maximalist nor minimalist. Instead, she lands somewhere in between—a place where traditional forms are retained but given room to breathe in the present.
There is evidence of thoughtful tailoring in every garment. Hemlines are deliberate, stitchwork is clean, and fabric combinations—especially in printed tops and mixed-texture gowns—speak to an eye for harmony. Even the accessories, like the subtle silver cross necklace paired with the featured blue ensemble, feel considered rather than styled-in.
However, in some instances, the pieces risk visual repetition. A few of the kaftans while well-crafted do not offer new interpretations beyond updated cuts. There is also room for greater experimentation with layering or unconventional fabric pairings that could elevate the storytelling further. The foundation is strong; the next chapter could afford to push boundaries more.
Victoria Oluwakemi Owolabi’s Àbísó collection carries a strong identity and a sense of pride in African aesthetics. In every stitch, fabric choice, and silhouette, she captures the pulse of a generation that is eager to honor its cultural roots while boldly redefining what African fashion can be. In Àbísó, MOVEK Fashion hasn’t just introduced a new collection, It has reintroduced us to the power of being named and the beauty of wearing that name with pride. With this collection, Victoria continues to craft a visual archive of cultural memory and creativity.
