When You’re Afraid to Find Out

By Judy Okolo

“I knew something had changed. I just didn’t want anyone to tell me what it meant.”

She had noticed it weeks earlier. At first, she told herself it was probably nothing. Then came another explanation: Maybe it will disappear after my period.
It didn’t.
Still, she waited.

Not because she did not care about her health. Quite the opposite. She was afraid.
Afraid the doctor might confirm the very thing she was trying not to think about. Afraid of tests, hospitals, treatment and the possibility that life as she knew it could suddenly change.
So she did what many of us sometimes do when uncertainty frightens us—she avoided the answer.
Perhaps you recognise yourself somewhere in her story.
You have felt something unusual but postponed the appointment. Your doctor recommended a test, but months later, you still have not done it. You keep checking a lump, hoping it will disappear. Or you have searched your symptoms online repeatedly, becoming more frightened with every click.
Fear can be powerful. But here is the uncomfortable truth:

Not knowing does not protect you. Knowing gives you choices.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we will see pink ribbons and reminders about breast health everywhere. But awareness must become action.

Finding a breast change does not automatically mean cancer. Neither does every unusual symptom signal serious disease. But persistent or concerning changes deserve professional evaluation—not panic, denial or endless Google searches.

So, what can you do when fear is holding you back?

Name the fear. Ask yourself, What exactly am I afraid of—the test, pain, the result, treatment or simply not being in control? Naming fear makes it easier to address.

Take one step, not ten. You do not need to solve every possible outcome today. Your first step may simply be booking an appointment.

Take someone with you. A trusted friend or relative can provide emotional support and help you remember questions and information.

Write your questions down. What could this change mean? What tests are necessary? What happens next? Replace frightening assumptions with reliable information.

Stop using the internet as your doctor. Online information can educate you, but it cannot examine you, understand your individual risk or make a diagnosis.

And please, do not wait for fear to disappear before taking action.

Courage is not always feeling confident. Sometimes courage is making the appointment while your heart is still pounding.
Your body deserves more than worry. It deserves answers.

This October, if there is a check, screening or appointment you have been postponing, make it.

Because sometimes the most empowering words you can say about your health are:

“I’m afraid—but I’m going to find out.”

Until next time, let’s glow intentionally.
