Top Female Emerging Nigerian fashion designers to look out for this 2021

The Nigerian fashion scene is bustling, vibrant, and incredibly creative, as emerging designers carve out their niche alongside established colleagues and major brands. Over the past two decades, fashion shows within the country, across the continent, and beyond have provided platforms for lesser-known brands to catapult into the spotlight.

In no particular order, these eight Female fashion designers have been making silent waves with their crafts.

Ruth Erikan James: The talented designer started the Veekee James brand in 2019 and, within two years, has built a reputation for award-winning dresses and memorable, head-turning wedding designs. 

Oyetomiwa Elizabeth Daniel: The Paris-trained designer set up shop in 2020 and did not look back. She hit the ground running and has gained a reputation as the go-to fashion designer for bridal wear and celebrity clothing. Her brand, Xtra Brides Lagos (XBL), rules both the red carpet and wedding fashion, from lush and soft pieces to dazzling and extravagant styles. She is a brand to look forward to this year. 

Rachael Oluwafunmilayo Adeniyi: She is a talented and dedicated lady, lover of art and craft. Rachael is the Creative director of Rhaychaelle_Cut. She is into making of bespoke and ready to wear dresses and selling of different types of fabric. With a Bsc in Accounting, this Fashion Designer has a genuine passion for fashion creativity and staying dedicated to her skill.

Rhaychaelle_Cut’s Minimalist Luxe collection focused on clean lines, neutral colors and luxurious fabrics, creating a timeless and sophisticated aesthetic that exudes understated elegance. Indeed, the industry is on the look out for more from Rachael.

Olubukunmi Ogidan: The designer behind the rising fashion brand, Buki Luxe, came to prominence after showcasing the ‘Cascading Dream’ collection during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

Buki Luxe’s Culture Couture is more than just clothing; it’s a means of expressing identity, history, and creativity. Drawing inspiration from the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Africa, the brand aims to showcase the continent’s beauty and dynamism in every stitch, pattern, and detail.

Cynthia Abila: Since the launch of her womenswear brand in 2015, fashion designer Cynthia Abila has become known for her unique fabrication, which is defined by aesthetics and colour. Her designs, influenced by the cultures of South-South and South-Eastern Nigeria, are created with centuries-old techniques of handmade fabric production. 

Abigail Ajobi: After graduating in 2019 from UAL’s London College of Fashion, she established her luxury streetwear fashion design label in 2020. She has been using the Abigail Ajobi brand’s print-based design to create social awareness about uncomfortable social issues.

Oyindamola Aleshinloye:  The CEO and creative director of the Kadiju fashion brand, has established a strong presence in the womenswear niche, using stock fabrics and recycled materials to turn out hand-made, maximalist creations.

Omafume Niemogha: After she graduated from the University of Lagos in 2018, Omafume launched Pepper Row, a luxury ethical label devoted to the creation of eccentric, wearable art designs described as Neo-African. Her Pepper Row design brand infuses Africa’s rich heritage with Western influences to create eye-catching pieces that embody the culture of the continent. production techniques that include hand-weaving raffia and using plant-based dyes, woodcarving and hand-painting for bespoke textiles. Her 2020 SS collection has put her in the frame as a fashion designer who will rule the runways of the future.
