Microwave Mistakes That Ruin Your Food
By Yemisi Suleiman
The microwave is one of the most convenient kitchen appliances ever invented, a lifesaver on busy days when we just want to reheat leftovers or make a quick meal. But while it’s fast and efficient, using it the wrong way can ruin the texture, taste, and even nutritional value of your food. Here are some common microwave mistakes to avoid if you want your meals to come out hot, fresh, and delicious.
- Using the Wrong Containers
Plastic takeout boxes, disposable plates, or containers with metallic parts can release harmful chemicals or spark in the microwave. Always use microwave-safe glass, ceramic, or labeled microwave-safe plastics. Avoid thin foam and unknown plastics. - Reheating Unevenly
We’ve all experienced it, food that could be scalding hot in one spot and ice-cold in another. This happens when you don’t stir or spread food out evenly. To fix it, cover dishes with a lid or microwave-safe wrap and stir halfway through heating. - Overheating Everything
Microwaving for too long dries food out, leaving meat rubbery and rice rock-hard. Shorter bursts with pauses to stir or flip food give better results. - Skipping the Cover
Leaving food uncovered causes it to splatter, while covering it traps steam, keeping meals moist and evenly heated. Just remember to leave a small vent so steam can escape. - Ignoring Standing Time
When the timer beeps, food is still cooking from residual heat. Cutting into it immediately can ruin the texture and let juices escape. Allow dishes to rest for a minute or two before serving. - Microwaving Certain Foods
Some foods simply don’t do well in the microwave. Bread becomes chewy, fried foods lose their crunch, and eggs can explode. Opt for the oven or stovetop instead for those. - Not Cleaning the Microwave
A dirty microwave not only looks (and smells) unpleasant, but old food splatters can reheat and alter the flavour of fresh meals. A quick wipe after each use keeps it in top shape.
